There are twenty‐six Trustee positions on the Board. Four of these come from specific constituencies: Students, Faculty, the Parents Association, and the Alumni Board. Each of these groups has their own process for appointing their representative, with terms of either one or two years.
The majority of Trustees, 20 in number, follow a separate process, and typically they are drawn from among the Adjunct Members of Board committees. An Adjunct is just a term for a committee member who is not a Trustee. Up to one‐half of a committee’s members may consist of Adjuncts, partly to ensure we have sufficient expertise during our Committee work, and also to provide an opportunity for individuals to experience the work of the Board. As a result of this exposure, an Adjunct may be asked if they are willing to be considered for a position as Trustee at some point in the future. If asked, and if they are so willing, they are formally interviewed by the Joint Nominating Committee, which includes representatives from both the Board as well as the Stony Run Meeting. When there is an opening among these 20 Trustee positions, it is filled from among the candidates who have been previously reviewed and supported by the JNC. Of these 20 positions, at least 10 of them must be filled by Quakers, of whom at least 6 must come from Stony Run.
In addition, there are two Trustee positions that are filled by appointment directly by the Board. These positions are typically reserved for individuals who possess a particular needed expertise, and may not even come from within the Friends School community.
Trustees are asked to make a commitment, or renew their commitment, to serve a minimum of one to three years. No Trustee may serve more than seven consecutive years, and must then take a hiatus from the Board of a minimum of two years before being eligible for another term as Trustee.
