The core curriculum of general music begins in Pre-K and continues through Eighth Grade, encouraging music literacy, participation and performance. Lower Schoolers attend music classes twice a week. Beginning in the Third Grade, they gain exposure to instrumental music by trying out different instruments in a group setting. In Fourth and Fifth Grade, students select an instrument to play and then rehearse twice a week with a Lower School band or string orchestra.
Middle School students take general music twice a week in all three grades, where they continue working on their music literacy and focused listening skills, as well as a number of interdisciplinary projects. Interested students have the opportunity to join the chorus, band, and string orchestra. Most students choose to participate in at least one musical group. In-day rehearsals are an integral part of the academic curriculum.
Upper School students achieve a high level of music proficiency in a variety of performance ensembles, including the Concert Chorale, the Chamber Choir, Wind Ensemble, String Orchestra and the Jazz Ensemble. Students who take Music Theory/Ear Training I and II and participate in an ensemble can elect a music major within their individualized academic program. As in the Middle School, music ensembles and classes are scheduled during the academic day.
