Friends School of Baltimore

Friends School’s athletic and physical education programs reflect the School’s commitment to educating the whole person—morally, intellectually, and physically.

At Friends, athletics and physical education complement other areas of the curriculum, enhancing the student’s entire educational experience. Students not only develop their physical prowess, they gain self-confidence and discipline—which, in turn, helps improve their academic performance. They practice good sportsmanship and team play, strengthening their ethical and social development, and form healthy lifestyle habits, laying the groundwork for a lifetime of fitness. Throughout the program, students’ physical skills, strengths and weaknesses are addressed and communicated to both students and their parents. Physical education classes are held two or three times per week at every level through Grade 10. Students take part in all major team sports as well as tennis, golf, rock climbing, racquetball, archery, fencing, dance, weight training, badminton, and personal fitness. Courses in Red Cross First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) are also required.

Friends fields spirited and dedicated teams that consistently compete for championships in their conferences.

Friends School is a member of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) and the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) athletic leagues. Most Middle and Upper School students participate in a variety of after-school sports activities each season. Middle and Upper School students must compete in at least one sport season per year, although many participate in two or three. Students who do not choose to play team sports during a given season make valuable contributions to the program by serving on the support staff and videotaping games, keeping statistics, or operating the scoreboard.
