In the summer of 2011 teachers from the Lower School at Friends School of Baltimore gathered and worked throughout the library’s collection to identify books that lend themselves to the teaching of the Quaker testimonies. SPICES (Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality and Stewardship) is an acronym used to identify six testimonies that are essential elements for understanding Quakerism. Most of the titles are picture books but non-fiction and longer fiction have been included as well.
To use the lists select one of the testimonies on the right hand side of the screen to see lists of books that could be used to illustrate that principle of Quakerism. A search component is also available for author/title searches.
If you have a suggestion for a title to be added to the database please contact , Lower School Librarian. As our understanding of Quakerism is ever-evolving so is the world of children’s literature that will help us all comprehend these valuable concepts more fully.
