Friends School of Baltimore

Student Life:

Clubs and Activities

The Lower School offers a number of extracurricular opportunities which are offered voluntarily by faculty members. Listed below are some of the activities offered at no cost to the parent. Activities are limited in size and to appropriate grade level(s).

  • After School Dance — This class will introduce first grade students to dance basics and vocabulary through movement games and teacher-lead activities. The dancers will be free to explore their own movement within a structured lesson. They will move to many different types of music and begin to work on rhythm, counting, and music appreciation. Parents are invited to observe on the final class date!
  • Boys and Girls Soccer — Come and practice your soccer skills while having fun with your friends!  In this after school activity, we will work on fundamental soccer skills, scrimmage and watch the boy’s and girl’s Varsity soccer teams as our models for success.  On soccer days, please wear athletic shorts, tennis shoes and bring shin guards with you to the field.  Open to fourth and fifth graders.
  • Detectives Club —Join other mystery lovers in reading and solving cool literary puzzles.  Open to second graders.
  • Fairy Crafts Club — Fairy crafts for girls and boys!  Make fairy houses, flower fairies, and a special Mother’s Day surprise!  Boys and girls encouraged to apply.  Open to first graders.
  • Field Hockey Clinic — Join your classmates for warm-ups and beginner field hockey skills.  You will have an opportunity to meet seasoned Friends field hockey players and learn the skills and drills for future game play.  Each participant will need a mouth guard and shin guards. Open to fifth graders.
  • Games of Logic and Strategy Club — Students in grades 3, 4, and 5, who want to play games such as Chess, Othello, Set, Master Mind and many others!
  • Junior Joggers Club — The Junior Jogger Club will be a combination of adult staff, faculty and students in grades 1, 4 and 5.  Participants will work on proper warm-up, stretching and pacing from a walk to a jog.  Each participant will keep a log of their distance traveled and receive mileage tokens.  Participants will need proper running attire and running sneakers.
  • Let's Knit — Let’s Knit is an after-school activity for fourth graders with some knitting experience.   Children will complete a scarf by the end of 3 weeks.
  • Math Enrichment — We are offering a math workshop packed with activities and games that are challenging, hands-on, and fun! This activity will provide a broad view of mathematics that emphasizes the enhancement of creative and higher-order thinking through enrichment, not acceleration. Open to second and third graders.
  • Math Enrichment — Students who are highly motivated in math and have shown strong classroom performance will enjoy an opportunity to explore fun and challenging problems in a small collaborative group. Open to fourth and fifth graders.
  • Russian for Fun — Lee Roby, US Russian teacher, invites 4th and 5th graders (who did not take Russian for Fun last year) to participate in some fun activities involving the Russian language and culture, including: learning the Russian alphabet, Russian folk art, Ukrainian Easter eggs and how Russians celebrate Easter, making some Upper School Russian friends, learning about maslinitsa and eating yummy bliny, learning to pronounce BA-bush-ka correctly, playing games that Russian kids your age play.
  • Steampunk Book Club — Genetically engineered whales that people can fly? Houses that orbit the earth? Old-fashioned styles and unreal, fantastical creations and situations? That’s steampunk! Steampunk is a subgenre of fantasy fiction that combines fantasy and historical writing. We will be enjoying four steampunk novels and discussing them as a part of this book club. Families are asked to pay for the books that we will read (at a discounted price and the books will belong to the students). School library and public library copies will also be made available. Open to fifth graders.
  • Yoga —Yoga helps increase flexibility, build strength and relieve stress.  And it’s fun!  First graders will learn some basic yoga postures and simple relaxation techniques, along with some yoga-like exercises from other cultures.  Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to stretch.
  • Wrestling Club — Fourth and fifth graders are invited to come learn the finer points of one of the world’s oldest sports, wrestling.  Through games and drills, students will be introduced to the sport, learning rules, scoring and moves that build both fitness and character.  Students will be matched up by weight and skill level to assure maximum learning.  Intra-squad “matches” will be held at least every other week.  The club will be three days a week, and a request is made for a commitment to this time.  (Do NOT sign up if you are going to be doing a club that might overlap!)  This club will be held alongside the Middle School wrestling practice, and some interaction and teaching will be done with them. This activity is considered a full-body contact sport.
