Radioactive Golf Balls (7:54) Working in groups of 2-3 students, seventh graders in Middle School science teacher Ellen Weis's class were given 20 minutes to design and test a device that can quickly transport "radioactive" golf balls from one bag to another, over a distance of eight feet. The golf balls must stay at least 3" away from any body part and cannot come into contact with the leader's clothing. If a ball gets dropped, there'll be a contamination leak, and the leader must return the contaminated ball back to bag #1.
Materials: 5 golf balls, 4- 4" pieces of string, 4 drinking straws, 2 skewers, 4 paper clips, 4 rubber bands, 5 Post-It notes, 3 push pins, 1 pencil, 1' tape

Quaker Testimonies in Children's Literature (1:44) In the summer of 2011 teachers from the Lower School at Friends School of Baltimore gathered and worked throughout the library’s collection to identify books that lend themselves to the teaching of the Quaker testimonies. SPICES (Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality and Stewardship) is an acronym used to identify six testimonies that are essential elements for understanding Quakerism. Most of the titles are picture books but non-fiction and longer fiction have been included as well.

Why Upper School students value Friends' coeducational approach to learning (1:25) Each of us knows from our individual perspectives why Friends is so special. Taken together, these four key messages—Balanced * Morally centered * Responsive * Coeducational—provide a compelling platform from which to frame your own advocacy of the School. UPDATE recently spoke with four Upper Schoolers about why they value Friends’ coeducational approach to learning.

Mighty Milers (1:07) Now in its third year, the Mighty Milers (and its younger equivalent, Junior Joggers) provides boys and girls in grades four and five the opportunity “to move, explore and develop with a sport they can participate in for life,” says Lower School Assistant Principal Cynthia Barney, who heads both programs. More than 60 Lower Schoolers participated in Mighty Milers and Junior Joggers during the fall and spring sessions. Students practice proper warm-up, stretching, pacing, trail running and cool-down techniques, and have the added benefit of working with members of the Upper School Cross-Country team.

Seventh Grade Service Learning Project (0:34) Seventh graders in Erika Smith’s ‘93 geography class took their study of natural disasters one step further by integrating a comprehensive service learning project into their unit. Working individually and in small groups, the students planned and implemented 16 different fundraisers, including dress-down days, bake sales, a Middle School dance, a soccer clinic and off-site collections at religious congregations and area restaurants to raise a total of $5,800.
“The students initially planned to use all proceeds toward assembling a variety of emergency kits for distribution by Church World Service,” said Becky Boynton, Service Learning Coordinator, who, with Smith, was instrumental in helping to organize the student-led efforts. Following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan—and CWS’ subsequent call for financial help in the aftermath—the class opted for both: they sent CWS checks totaling $4,472.45 for emergency relief in Japan, and they used the remaining funds to assemble and ship 100 school-, 32 hygiene-, and six baby care kits. “The students were enthusiastic and had terrific ideas,” says Smith, “I’m hoping this lays a foundation for them to engage in similar service learning in the future.”

Middle School Whirligigs (2:52) Following their study of the YA novel "Whirligig', 8th graders create a "kinetic self-portrait" that helps them to understand the novel's protagonist—and themselves—better. "The project is a rite of passage for our students and reflects Friends' educational emphasis on such 21st century skills and habits of mind as creativity, curiosity, reflection, resiliency, collaboration and critical thinking," says principal Scott Harrington.
