With an emphasis on cooperative learning and hands-on, real life activities, our Middle School’s rigorous academic program develops students’ critical thinking skills and habits of the mind (creativity, curiosity, empathy, reflection, resiliency). All students take the core subjects – English, math, social studies, science, and foreign language – in heterogeneously grouped classes (not grouped by ability). The faculty’s approach to teaching reflects an understanding that children learn in a variety of ways, which includes forms of authentic assessment that truly give students the opportunity to “show what they know” and to reveal their multi-intelligences. Students needing extra help in any subject area will find teachers available for individual assistance before, during, and after the school day. The classrooms in our middle school are active, inquisitive, and joyous places!
Along with the core subjects, students take physical education, art, music, technology, and life skills classes that help them develop their creative sides, as well as their social confidences and their decision making skills. Elective and enrichment courses, such as chorus, band, orchestra, ceramics, and computer graphics provide further balance and a focus for further channeling the students’ creative energies.
The Quaker philosophy and testimonies (equality, truth, simplicity, peace, stewardship, and community) are woven throughout the fabric of the Middle School experience. Whether in the classroom, on the athletic field, or through performance ensembles, students develop a respect for their schoolmates as individuals and learn to appreciate the differences in each other. Students and faculty attend weekly Meeting for Worship at the Stony Run Friends Meetinghouse, where they spend time in quiet reflection with the opportunity to share insights and concerns in an atmosphere of quiet trust.
