Back-to-School Service Opportunity: Help Provide School Supplies to Needy Local Students

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 9, 2011

Baltimore, MD—The Baltimore County Public School year will begin on Monday, August 29, 2011; yet hundreds of students will start the season without the necessary school supplies. The Friends community can reach out to these families in need by supporting the Fund for Social Welfare’s Back to School Project.

For more than 20 years, the Fund, in conjunction with the Volunteer Office of the Baltimore County Department of Social Services, has equipped thousands of children with new notebooks, three-ringed binders, pencils/pens, and other materials in preparation for the first day of school. Last year, nearly 285 donors provided more than 1,100 school-aged children with such support, either by sponsoring a child (or family) directly, or by donating funds, gift cards or school supplies.

Friends families who wish to sponsor a needy local student (or family) during this year’s campaign are encouraged to contact the Volunteer Office at 410.853.3024 or email them at dward3@dhr.state.md.us.  The Volunteer Office will then provide you with the name(s), grade(s) and school supply list(s) of each child.

Upon purchasing the supplies, donor families have the option of delivering them directly to the recipients, or dropping them off on or before Friday, August 19, 2011 at the Baltimore County Volunteer Office, Drumcastle Government Center, 6401 York Road, Baltimore, Maryland 21212. There, staff and volunteers will deliver the school goods to families in time for the start of the school year.

Now in its 227th year, Friends School of Baltimore is an independent, college preparatory school for boys and girls age 4 through grade 12. Rooted in the enduring values of the Quakers, the School is committed to providing a balanced education and developing in each student a vigorous intellect and the habits of a peaceful heart.
