Baltimore, MD—This Monday, as it has since 2004, Friends School will send hundreds of parents, students, faculty and alumni into the community to do a variety of service activities in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. To date, more than 450 adults and children have registered for 21 different activities at such sites as Helping Up Mission and Manor Care. This number is slightly under the 467 students, parents, faculty and alumni who signed up last year. “We have 530 spots available,” says Becky Boynton, the School’s Service Learning Coordinator. “I am not worried about the turn out for any of the activities.”
Friends’ Day of Service has attracted volunteers from beyond the School community. In 2011, the program was among 20 statewide events being cited by the Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism as part of its 2011 Inaugural Week Celebration. This year, individuals from Civic Works and UMBC have signed on, according to Boynton. “Civic Works found out about us and is sending volunteers to five different activities!” she said.
