Baltimore, MD—The American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Language (AATSEEL) presented Friends Upper School Russian teacher Lee Roby with the 2011 Award for Excellence in Secondary School Teaching. Roby accepted the award on January 6, 2012 during the association’s national convention in Seattle, WA, where she’d been invited to serve on a “best practices” teaching roundtable.
In presenting Roby with the award, Nancy Condee, AATSEEL executive council president, said, “Lee continues the strong tradition of excellence in the Friends School Russian program. She trains her students to a prizewinning level of proficiency in Russian language and culture, with grounded pedagogy incorporating new approaches and technology as well as traditional and thorough foundation in the language.”
In addition to honoring Roby, the AATSEEL citation recognizes Friends School for its significant contributions to the profession. “Friends schools around the country were pioneers in exploring Russian-American contacts among young people, during the Cold War, and Lee’s school is proud to carry that tradition into the post-communist period,” reads the citation.
