Baltimore, MD—The six-man Friends Wrestling Team traveled to Glenelg on January 19 for a tri-meet against Glenelg and Baltimore Lutheran. All three teams were low on numbers so the coaches focused on giving all healthy wrestlers a match and skipped keeping team scores. All able-bodied wrestlers were matched up at the outset, some even wrestling twice, but then the injuries began. With Friends’ squad already down a grappler—Avery Daniels ’13 was nursing a shoulder injury—the Quakers had a fairly short time of it. The results of the matches are as follows:

Friends v. Baltimore Lutheran

Zach Spawn ’14 (138 lbs.) went out strong in the first period, taking his opponent down and controlling him on top. As he was turning him for the pin, the Lutheran wrestler reinjured a rib and had to default the match to Zach because of the injury.
Devon deFilippi ’15 (152 lbs.) had a nice match against a fairly experienced Lutheran wrestler.  In the first period Devon was taken down, but fought hard and, although unable to escape, avoided back points.  In the second period, his opponent caught him with a ¾ nelson and was able to turn him for a pin.
Danny Rogers ’15 (195 lbs.) was matched up against an opponent wrestling up a weight class.  At the end of the first period, he was down 1-2, having escaped a backfired takedown attempt. In the second period he quickly escaped and, using a good headlock, made the pin in 3:28.

Friends v. Glenelg

Danny Rogers ’15 led off this match, and lost by a pin in the first period.
Ben Sitzer ’15 (132 lbs.) wrestled a smart and scrappy match, taking his man down twice in the first period.  In the second period, Glenelg made a takedown and was able to score a point on the escape, but Ben caught him with a headlock and settled in to pin him in 3:11.
Charlie Blake ’15 (145 lbs.) wrestled strong, but was caught in the first period and pinned.
Danny Rogers faced a second, stronger wrestler as exhibition and was pinned in the first period.
Lastly, Devon deFilippi ’15 faced off against an opponent two weight classes up, or about 30 lbs. heavier.  Devon showed some very intelligent wrestling: when taken down in the first period he used good balance to score a reverse, ending the period in a 2-2 tie.  In the second period, Devon chose to start down and was able to score 2 points on a reversal. He then put his opponent on his back to score 3 more points.  Using his weight, the Glenelg grappler was able to get off his back and scrambled to get a reversal at the end of the period.  Down 7-4 going into the third period, the Glenelg wrestler chose to start the period standing.  Devon was able to not only take him down (scoring 2), but also turn him to his back and pin him in 4:59!
