Upper School Hosts Benefit Powderpuff Football Tournament on September 29

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 21, 2012

Baltimore, MD—Friends Upper School on Saturday, September 29 will host its inaugural Powderpuff Football Tournament to benefit TurnAround, Inc.’s anti-sex trafficking division. TurnAround is a Baltimore County-based Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Center. Kick-off is at 12:30 pm, with two games played simultaneously on the Friends football fields—Freshmen vs. Sophomores on one field, and Juniors vs. Seniors on another. The two winning teams will then face off, and the winner of that game will play the faculty. All players are female. Friends School men and boys are serving as referees, coaches and, of course, fans. (In the event of rain, the event will take place on Sunday, October 7, beginning at 12:30 pm.)

The day-long event will feature food, including barbecue offerings, baked goods, cold drinks and music. Admission is free, however those playing in the tournament must pay a donation (of any dollar amount) to participate. Additionally, event organizers will have collection jars on site for anyone who wishes to donate money to the cause.

All proceeds from the tournament and concession sales will be used to assemble “Freedom Packs” for TurnAround’s female clients who are at risk of harm. Such packs typically include new cell phones, gift cards for food and a fresh change of clothing.

Upper School senior girls, working with faculty advisor Molly Doyle ’07, have organized an after-school service club in behalf of TurnAround, Inc. The Powderpuff Football Tournament is the club’s first fundraiser. For more information about the September 29 games, or to make a donation through Friends School, contact Molly Doyle at mdoyle@friendsbalt.org or 410.649.3343.
