Friends Community Garden

The Friends Community Garden is a joint endeavor between Stony Run Friends Meeting and the Friends School of Baltimore and graces a spot adjacent to the School’s main driveway.  Started in 2009 with impetus from several energetic Meeting members, this concept moved from dream to reality and has quite literally borne fruit (and vegetables!) before our very eyes.  The tangible result of the garden is the regular contribution of its produce to the CARES food pantry.  No less significant, though, has been the sense of enhanced connection between the Meeting and the School, and the benefits this partnership has brought to those involved from both institutions.  In addition to the many Meeting members who have toiled in the garden, volunteers have come forth from all of the School’s various constituent groups, and have ranged from small children to senior citizens.  This multi-generational, multi-faith corps of workers shares a common purpose and an abiding passion for working the earth and getting their hands dirty.  We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership on the Community Garden!

Purpose of the Garden

  • Educating students and their families about the connection between growing food & healthful eating
  • Sharing community activities between the School and the Meeting
  • Caring for the earth and its resources
  • Involving students in creative, productive, hands-on outdoor activity
  • Providing a role model and opportunity to learn from other school and faith communities
  • Supplying nutritious, fresh food for our neighbors served by the CARES food pantry
