The Upper School offers a challenging college preparatory program in an environment where individual differences and perspectives are respected and encouraged. Students generally take five major courses: English, history, mathematics, science, and a foreign language (Russian, Latin, French or Spanish). A broad range of course offerings within these disciplines allows students to tailor the academic program to suit their aptitudes and interests. Seniors also have the chance to put what they learn into practice and gain real-life work experiences in month-long professional internships in the spring of the 12th grade year.
Upper School students can also choose from electives in the visual arts, instrumental and vocal music, media and technology, and drama. The Upper School drama program stages three major theater productions each year, and the Concert Chorale, Chamber Choir, and Wind, Jazz, and String Ensembles each present at least two performances annually. In addition to physical education classes for Ninth and Tenth Graders, Upper School students must participate in at least one after-school sport season per year; many participate in two or three.
The entire Upper School gathers each morning for Collection,
a time for sharing information and announcements as well as
for guest speakers and special presentations.
Weekly Meeting for Worship at the Stony Run Friends
Meetinghouse offers students the opportunity for quiet
reflection and sharing insights and is an integral part of Upper
School life. Students and alumni frequently recall experiences
with classmates during Meeting for Worship as some of the
most profound and nurturing of their formative years.
