Friends School of Baltimore

Academic Program:

Senior Work Project

The Senior Work Project is designed to give students the experience of meaningful participation in the adult world of work.  During the last five weeks of 12th grade, seniors work at businesses, laboratories, schools, offices and shops under the supervision of a mentor.  All seniors are expected to participate in this program, unless they are in danger of not graduating or have not completed their community service commitment.

The work projects take place from early May to early June.  The Senior Work Project Committee approves the projects that seniors select.  Students do not receive pay for their work and the placement should be in the greater Baltimore area.  After taking early semester exams, seniors work at their project sites for 35 hours per week for approximately five weeks.  Accommodations will be made for those students involved in sports or the musical, as well as those sitting for Advanced Placement exams, and the students will inform their mentors of the necessary adjustments to their work schedule.

All participants keep a journal describing and reflecting upon their experiences.  They return to Friends School for Senior Day to give oral reports and poster presentations to the entire upper school.
