The Friends School of Baltimore is an academically challenging community that culminates in a strong college preparatory program. Inherent in its Quaker philosophy, Friends School recognizes the strengths and talents of all students, including those otherwise qualified students with documented learning disabilities. While there is no special program for individuals with disabilities, Friends School is committed to providing support services and reasonable accommodations to students who need them. Our goal, then, is twofold; we want to maintain the academic integrity of the school, and we want to provide our students with the requisite skills to be successful.
Schoen Oakes, Upper School Learning Specialist, oversees learning support services and serves as a resource for students, parents, and faculty. For those students who have a diagnosed learning disability and have the documentation on file with the school, she prepares an Individual Student Profile (ISP) for the teachers and monitors accommodations as needed.
A teacher, parent, advisor, or Grade Dean may refer students to Ms. Oakes, or students may "self-refer" for short-term assistance. Christine Saudek serves as an additional support for students who need academic help. Outside referrals are available for those parents and students looking for more intensive or long-term academic support. The Learning Specialist works closely with the Counselor, the Principal, the Academic Dean, the College Counselors, and the Grade Deans as appropriate.
