Friends School Welcomes Visiting Artist Jim Starr

Friends School is thrilled to announce Jim Starr as the 2025 Fay Karfgin ’59 Visiting Artist. Jim Starr is an award-winning freelance illustrator with over 20 years of experience. Starr graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a BFA in illustration and has worked with a variety of clients across the U.S. and beyond for various needs, including children’s books, logos, icons, package design, magazine illustrations, portraits, event posters, and web graphics. Through illustration, Starr aims to tell clear and compelling visual stories.

Recently, Starr has returned to his first love of painting in watercolor and oils. He loves to paint story-filled scenes from his local Southern York County, Pa., rural environment. He is drawn to the beauty of his local landscapes and the wholesome lifestyles of the people who live there. Through painting, Starr aims to create scenes layered with mystery and atmosphere, utilizing light to draw viewers in and invite them to linger.

Livelihoods: Illustrations and Art of Jim Starr will be on display in the Katz Gallery, lower level of the Forbush Building, through Friday, April 10. This exhibit was made possible by the Fay Karfgin ’59 Art Lecture Fund.

Exhibit tours for non-students and non-employees are by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, please contact Ben Roach, Upper School Art Teacher, broach@friendsbalt.org, and check in at the Upper School office on the day of your visit.
