J.P. Morgan, Sam Burgunder ’21 Host Friends School Students

In December, alumnus Sam Burgunder ’21 welcomed upper school students from Friends School and Glenelg Country School to the J.P. Morgan Private Bank Baltimore office. The students were accompanied by Upper School Assistant Principal Travis Henschen and Upper School Math Department Chair and teacher Carl Schlenger.

Upon arrival, students (Cary D. ’28, Jack M. ’26, Clara W. ’27, Jackson S. ’26, Barak A. ’26, and Will A. ’26) met with Burgunder, an analyst, and were introduced to other members of his team, including senior leaders and fellow analysts. Students received an overview of J.P. Morgan’s structure as a global financial institution, with a closer look at the Private Bank and the Baltimore office’s work with high-net-worth individuals managing complex balance sheets. The team also explored key asset classes, discussing risk profiles, time horizons, and income and growth potential, before students began a hands-on case study.

Students then broke into small groups to collaborate on the case study, which challenged them to apply critical thinking skills to construct a multi-asset portfolio for a client persona. Drawing on their newly acquired knowledge, students selected assets designed to best meet their clients’ financial goals and needs.

Each case study concluded with group presentations followed by a discussion to share insights and reflections. Burgunder noted that his colleagues were “impressed with the thinking and ability [of the students] to articulate their thoughts in such a short period of time.”
