As we count down to the end of the school year, we asked some of our seniors to tell us about their interests at Friends and how their experience has prepared them for the next step.

What is/has been your favorite subject at Friends and why?

My favorite subject at Friends is history, for a multitude of reasons. One reason was the diverse class options I was able to choose from during my years as an upperclassman. In my senior year, I took four different semester-long history classes, including History of the Russian Empire, Unbreakable Baltimore: A History of Our City, History of Diseases, and Introduction to Archival Work: World War II Collection. In these classes, I was able to do a deep dive into a topic I would otherwise not know much about. The diversity of these classes also allowed me to relook at history from a different and more specific viewpoint. There were moments when I would research the same time period, but on two opposite sides of the world. The History Department, especially the different electives, was able to paint a new perspective on global history for me. I will always be grateful for what my teachers provided for me.

Another reason I love the History Department is the variety of tasks assigned to us and the opportunities they offer.  In my Archive World War II class, we are transcribing artifacts written to Towson University from World War II soldiers. Learning how to transcribe artifacts is not a skill I was expecting to obtain, but I find it so exciting that I was able to gain that skill. I am grateful that at Friends, the teachers make an effort to keep assignments interesting and unique.

How do you think Friends has prepared you for your next step in life?

Next fall, I will be attending the University of Mississippi, where I will be able to utilize all of the skills Friends has taught me. I feel Friends has prepared me academically and socially to be able to thrive in college and afterwards. I have been able to grow in my teamwork skills as well as my leadership abilities while being guided by my peers and teachers. I have been pushed out of my comfort zone, learned to be resilient, and tried new things that I previously would have been hesitant about. 

I have been at Friends since pre-K and have been able to learn to incorporate the Quaker values in everyday life—simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship. The SPICES are truly part of me. I know they will continue to be guiding principles personally for continued intellectual curiosity and social responsibility.
