Yesterday, the Upper School Advanced Environmental Science class embarked on an all day research cruise with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) out of Baltimore Harbor. The students engaged in a variety of activities and discussions regarding bay health and their stewardship of the area as residents in the watershed. The students assessed water quality through testing samples and trawled for fish and other organisms living in the bay to assess biodiversity. They were able to map out the Chesapeake Bay watershed and view how Stony Run affects the water entering the harbor through the Jones Falls. They discussed the land use history of the surrounding area and its impacts on the Bay ecosystem. This experience directly connects to the topics that will continue to be discussed throughout the course this year. The students were also exposed to ideas for research protocol and background information that will be useful for their independent research projects they are carrying out on campus, many of which are focused on Stony Run. Megan Flora-Quinn, who leads the Advanced Environmental Science class, states that she feels "incredibly thankful to be a part of a community that encourages these types of experiences for students," and hopes to create future opportunities for her students such as this.
