Upper School STEM Speaker Series Welcomes Alum, Medical Student

As part of the Upper School STEM Speaker Series, and in partnership with Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), we welcomed Friends School alum Abby Corkum ’14, a current medical student at the University of Maryland School of Medicine who previously worked as a Research Fellow at the National Institute of Health and as a Senior Research Assistant at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Corkum discussed her experience in medical school, including topics on surgery, MCAT preparation, and applying to residency programs. 

Each year, Friends School's STEM Speaker Series hosts guests from a variety of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields who share their professional journey and details about their research and work with interested students. Fields represented include astronomy, engineering, medicine, neuroscience, genetics, biology, and a variety of other disciplines.

About Abby Corkum ’14:

Abby is a 2014 graduate of Friends School of Baltimore. She played Division I lacrosse at the College of William and Mary, where she graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology and health sciences. She then earned a Master of Public Health from Thomas Jefferson University before beginning medical school at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where she is working to earn her Doctor of Medicine. Corkum has previously worked at the National Institute of Public Health and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Medicine, and recently applied for a residency in Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery.
