• A view of Alex Pham '19's short story illustration, "Likes"

Visually gifted

Competing at the national level in the 2019 Scholastics Art & Writing Awards, Friends senior Alex Pham ’19 has been awarded a silver medal for his digital illustration, “Likes,” based on the homonymous New Yorker short story (Oct. 9, 2017) by Sarah Shun-lien Bynum. (The silver medal is awarded to "works demonstrating high honors on the national level," according to the website.)

Pham was one of three Friends seniors to earn multiple regional Gold Keys for their visual art entries. (A similar New Yorker-inspired project by Pham, “Everything is Far From Here,” also earned gold.) The other honorees include LuIu Whitmore ’19 (“Adrian,” drawing; “Colorado,” painting) and Kai Jenrette ’19 (“Prom,” logo design; “Hold the Guts, Give Me Glory,” sculpture), who recently earned early admission to The Cooper Union’s highly selective School of Art.

This was an especially bountiful year for Scholastic Art Awards distinction at the School: In all, six students were recognized for 17 individual visual art submissions.

Through April 13, visitors to Friends are invited to view all of these works during the Scholastics Art Awards exhibition in the Katz Gallery (Forbush Building, lower level).
