The 2019 Boys Varsity Lacrosse season is best described by one word: STREAKY! The team opened its campaign with three straight wins, followed by three straight losses, followed by four straight wins…and then a loss. Friends sat in 3rd place in the MIAA B Conference with 4 games left in the regular season when they traveled to Glenelg Country School on May 1, determined to spark another winning streak.
From the opening whistle, the game was different than the Quakes' March 29 loss (12-9) to the Dragons at Homewood Field. Drew Nathans ’19 went 11-18 on face-offs and helped the Quakers own the possession battle the entire game; This had not been the case in the previous match-up. On offense, a balanced and patient approach helped the Quakes build an 8-3 half-time lead, and ultimately a 10-6 final. Ned Forbush ‘21 led the way on offense with 3 goals, followed by Clayton Abrecht ’19 and Jack Bauer ’19 (2, 1), Mason Marchetti ’20 (2, 0), and Harry Deller '21 (1, 0) to get the Quakes rolling.
Freshman keeper Garrett Taylor ’22 anchored the defense with 11 saves on the day, quarterbacking 14 of 16 plays to ensure seamless midfield transitions. He was supported by defenders Carter Jones ’19, Liam Cullen ’19, Eli Sherbakov ’20, Declan Budnitz ’20, and Gabe Remch ’21, who combined for one of their best performances of the season. Short stick defenders Jordan Klawans ’19 and Bryan Hastings ’22 also helped with key ground balls and important clears from the defensive end.
Two days later, the Quakes traveled to Westminster, Md., to take on a much improved Gerstell Academy. The high scoring affair, which Friends won 20-11, was a big change of pace from Wednesday’s defensive contest at Glenelg. Friday’s game seemed to be well in hand as the Quakes held a 13-7 lead at the half, but Gerstell cut the lead to three midway through the 3rd quarter. Not to be outdone, Friends went on a 7-1 run to close out the game and win their second conference contest of the week. Jack Bauer ’19 and Ned Forbush ’21 led the way with 6 goals each. Nick Millspaugh ‘20, Harry Deller ‘21, Clayton Abrecht ‘19, and Mason Marchetti ‘20 all contributed on the offensive end in one of the Quakes highest scoring games of the season.
Streaking once again, it’s what this year’s Boys Varsity Lax team does. The team has clinched a playoff spot for the 2019 season and looks to improve its position with two upcoming home games, on Tuesday, May 7, when they host St. John’s Catholic Prep, and on Thursday, May 9, for a senior day match up against Park School. Both games start at 4 pm. Let’s fill the stands and make some noise, people. GO QUAKES!
