College Counseling Spotlight: Exploring Historically Black Colleges & Universities

Choosing the right college is one of the most exciting and daunting decisions that a student will make on their lifelong educational journey. For Friends students, this process begins around the 9th grade as our experienced and dedicated college guidance team starts getting to know families and students. In-person campus visits are one of the many strategies that students use to narrow down their college "wish list".

An annual highlight and student favorite is the Friends School trip to visit Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This year, 12 students and two faculty chaperones explored five HBCU’s in Virginia and Washington DC from September 30 - October 2. Students had the opportunity to visit Norfolk State University, Hampton University, Virginia State University, Virginia Union University and Howard University.

Students will have another opportunity to learn more about HBCUs at an upcoming “Information Night” hosted by Friends. The HBCU Information Night will take place on November 6 from 7 pm-9 pm in the Forbush Auditorium. The event is open to all Middle School and Upper School families and is free to attend. Many thanks to our event sponsoring partners, Garrison Forrest School and Gilman School for helping make this event possible.
