FSB set to observe 16th annual MLK Day of Service

Registration is now open for MLK Day of Service volunteer opportunities
Over 400 parents, students, faculty, and alumni will mobilize at sites throughout Baltimore on Monday, January 20th in support of Friends School’s 16th annual MLK Day of Service. Sponsored by the Parents Association, the day will offer families opportunities to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy of peace and social justice by volunteering on behalf of 18 worthwhile service organizations, including the Paul’s Place, Baltimore Hunger Project, Our Daily Bread Employment Center, and Art with a Heart, with several activities taking place on the Friends School campus. The action kicks off at 8:30 am in the Friends School Dining Hall with a Welcome Breakfast and remarks by our keynote speaker, Letrice Gant from Baltimore Ceasefire, a nonprofit that serves as a hub for organizations and citizens to support one another, work together, and share resources with the goal of seeing an end to murder in Baltimore City. They are a grassroots peace movement created to raise awareness about the high murder rate in Baltimore City, comfort families of the deceased, and reduce violent deaths in the city. The group makes a simple ask: For Baltimore City to be free of murder for 72 consecutive hours. This simple ask has transformed into ceasefire weekends in Baltimore.
Friends is also happy to welcome over 20 THREAD students, family members, and AmeriCorps members once again to this year’s Friends MLK Day of Service. Thread’s community will participate in making casseroles for Our Daily Bread alongside Friends School community members. Thread engages underperforming high school students confronting significant barriers outside of the classroom by providing each one with a family of committed volunteers and increased access to community resources. Thread believes relationships have the power to foster student’s academic advancement and personal growth into self-motivated, resilient, and responsible citizens.
