Athletics Winter Sports Update

After a historic fall for the Athletic Program, the winter teams took that as a challenge. Here is an update on how the winter has gone so far.

Girls Varsity Indoor Soccer:

The team is searching for its 1st championship since 2016 and the 8th in school history. That was the plan at the start of the season and this team never looked back. Under 1st-year head coach Nabil Odulate ’12 the team is a perfect 10 – 0 in the conference and headed to the championship game this Saturday, February 8, 2020, at Duburns Arena ay 1 PM. The team has been dominating outscoring their opponents 79 to 4, led by leading scorer Paige Saudek ‘22.

In this Saturday’s championship game, the team takes on an improving Mt. Carmel team. The two teams met on January 27th with the Quakes prevailing 3 – 2. Saturday’s game should be a thriller.

Girls Varsity Basketball:

Having their best season since 2014 the team finished 6 – 4 in conference and 9 – 6 overall in a tie for 4th place in the league. To say this team has been streaky is probably an understatement as they lost 4 of their first 5 games. The team won their next 3 games in a row, then lost 2 in a row, but came back strong playing their best basketball of the year and ended their regular season with 5 straight wins, including 3 of those games on the road. 2nd year coaches Lou Miguel and Henry Fuller have been led by newcomers Genique Gaither ’23 and Maya Carnes ’22. The Quakes travel to Indian Creek for a Quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday, February 11th.

Varsity Wrestling:

Coaches always say, “we want to be playing our best when it matters most”. That could be the mantra for this year’s wrestling team. Early season loses to Gerstell and Severn started the team off 1 – 2 on the season but as evident from their performance last Friday Night the team is headed in the right direction, as the MIAA Tournament gets on its way Friday afternoon at Gilman. Last Friday Night the Quakes avenged their early-season loss to Severn defeating them 30 – 18. Although Gerstell got the better of the team again, this time it went down to the final wrestler of the night as Gerstell edged the Quakes 36 – 33. Four straight pin wins’ vs Gerstell set the tone as Johan Shattuck '22, Zakiy Gasparovic ’21, Quinn Smith ’22, and David Stallsmith '20 scored pins in the first four matches. Top to bottom the team is wrestling well and is looking forward to this weekend’s MIAA tournament.

Varsity Squash:

The Senior led team finished 4th in MIAA play with an 8 – 6 conference record. In the Semifinals the team took on top-seeded and undefeated Gilman. As they have all year long the team fought hard but Gilman remained undefeated and advanced to the finals. Eight players will participate in the MIAA individual tournament next Monday. Seniors Jack Corkum, Noah Tunis, Milo Pavlovich, Zach Raynes, Nick von Schnell, Andrew Zejmis, Sander Schulhoff, and Sophomore Josh Steinitz all qualified this year. One huge highlight from the year was Friday Night Squash at Meadow Mill Athletic Club. The team hosted Park and swept the Bruins away that night 7 – 0.

Varsity Boys Basketball:

With 3 games remaining in the 2019 – 2020 The Quakes sit in 2nd place in the MIAA B Conference with an 8 – 3 record. Overall the team is 15 – 8 and is being led by Senior Jaden Derry, who scored his 1,000 career points in a 57 – 54 win at Severn Wednesday night, and Freshman Kendrick Curtis. This Friday the Quakes will look to avenge an earlier 56- 54 road loss to Chapelgate Academy. Tip-off is at 7 PM this Friday. Having already clinched a playoff spot, the team can secure a top 3 seed with a win over Chapelgate. Next week games at Indian Creek and then Valentine’s Day game in the Quaker Dome vs St John’s Catholic Prep conclude the regular season. Playoffs begin February 18th and conclude on February 23rd.
