Academics at Friends

In a world of exponentially increasing information, how do you prepare your children for a future you can only imagine? At Friends School, our students receive a solid academic foundation delivered within a structure that promotes innovation and creativity.

Our Pre-K through 12 college-preparatory program focuses on providing students with the tools and skills they need to express ideas, navigate complexity, and cultivate a genuine passion for inquiry.

Learning takes place in an atmosphere of trust, collaboration, and empathy. This intangible spirit is engrained in our School’s Quaker-based educational mission. It’s reflected in the quality of our dedicated teachers, who set high standards for excellence; and it’s in the confidence of our students, who set the bar high for success.

We invite you to discover just how joyful and challenging your child’s educational experience can be. Visit us.

  • Friends educator named 2018 Maryland History Teacher of the Year

Upper School history teacher Molly Smith '82 has been named the 2018 Maryland History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, an American history nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the knowledge and understanding of American history through K-12 educational programs and resources. Ms. Smith will receive $1,000 at a ceremony in her honor. With fellow Gilder Lehrman honorees – one from each state, the District of Columbia, U.S .Territories, and Department of Defense schools – she is now a candidate for the National History Teacher of the Year Award, which will be announced in September.

Describing his longtime colleague as a “teacher-leader, whose reflective practice inspires others,” Friends Upper School Principal Steve McManus says, "Molly has shaped the History Department at Friends by laying out and modeling a vision of teaching that is inquiry-based, heavily reliant on student choice, and organized on themes and questions rather than a chronological march through content."
