Townsend Merit Scholarship

The Joseph Townsend Merit Scholarship annually awards $20,000 scholarships to three new students applying to Friends School for grades 9 or 10. This scholarship is renewable for the duration of their enrollment at Friends School.

To be considered for this scholarship, applicants are required to complete the Friends School application for admission by December 15, 2017 and the Townsend Merit Scholarship application by January 5, 2018.

The Joseph Townsend Merit Scholarship honors the legacy of Joseph Townsend, who in 1784 founded the Friends School of Baltimore. Townsend was an educational leader, humanitarian and visionary who left his mark across the city of Baltimore. In addition to being the School’s first teacher, he founded the Maryland Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery, the first anti-slavery society in Maryland and the fourth in the nation.

Applicants considered for a Townsend Merit Scholarship will:
  • Be a new applicant for admission to Friends Upper School for 9th or 10th grade.
  • Demonstrate a proven record of strong academic achievement as demonstrated by current academic transcripts and standardized test scores
  • Share evidence of being an active member of communities through service, clubs, and activities
  • Exemplify the qualities consistent with the mission and philosophy of Friends School and advance the School’s Quaker values of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship.

Semifinalists will be invited to an on-campus interview event for families in late January.
Merit Scholarship recipients will receive notification of award with their admission decision on February 16, 2018.T
