A raucous Quakerdome crowd on January 18 saw the Varsity Wrestling team sweep Glenelg Country, Mt. Carmel, and Gerstell Academy during its 2nd annual Friday Night Wrestling event.
In the first match of three, the Quakes’ Johan Shattuck ‘22, Quinn Smith ’22, Zakiy Gasparovic '21, Pace Schwarz '19, and Jack Goodenough '19 pinned their Glenelg opponents to propel the home team to a 66-16 start.
Facing a tough Mt. Carmel team in the second match the Quakes once again collected pins from Zakiy Gasparovic and Jack Goodenough, as well as Jacob Grossman '22 and Rob Scott '21, avenging an earlier 45-30 loss to the Cougars with a 48-32 win.
Zach Smith '19 got the Quakes off to a great start in the final match of the night, pinning his Gerstell opponent in 1:29 and setting the stage for a 51-24 win against the shorthanded Falcons.
Calling the night an “awesome event,” head coach Bill Hardy praised his grapplers for their excellent progress. “The team has a good spread across the 14 weight classes – we only forfeit three weight classes this year – so we are able to match up well during practice.”
The Quakers presently stand at 4-1 in the MIAA B Conference and will close out January with away matches against Severn on Wednesday, January 23, followed by St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis on Thursday, January 31. “Severn is one we would really like to win, and it seems possible comparing numbers and wrestlers,” says Hardy. “Saint Mary's and Poly will be much tougher given the number of wrestlers on each of their teams, but we will certainly give both a good match.”
Looking ahead, you can catch the Quakes at home vs. Poly on Friday, February 1, 4:30 pm, in the Wrestling Room and watch for possible post-season runs from Quin Smith and Pace Schwarz. Says Hardy, "Quin is showing great promise for a freshman. He lost a close match to Mt. Carmel’s Tyler Trout and is currently 17-4. Pace is also having a great season. He placed third at the Knightmare Tournament and is currently 17-5. Both have a decent chance of placing at MIAA.”
