Ozzie and Joe Cowan ’64 issue 5:1 challenge for the Ronald A. Friedberg ’64 Memorial Scholarship
Friends School of Baltimore has announced a second challenge grant toward its $25 million comprehensive campaign, Setting the Stage. Ozzie and Joe Cowan ’64 have issued a 5:1 challenge on behalf of the Ronald A. Friedberg ’64 Memorial Scholarship.
“A 5:1 match is extraordinary!” said Friends’ Director of Development Ashley Principe. “We are most grateful to Ozzie and Joe for their commitment to Friends School and their support of our students.”
Background As a Friends student in the early 1960s, Ron “Ronny” Friedberg excelled in the classroom as an Honor Roll student and Quaker Quill writer; on the athletic courts and fields as a three-letter Varsity athlete; and on stage, where he performed classical piano and played the lead in the 1964 Mixed Chorus performance of Roger’s and Hammerstein’s “The King and I.” His tragic death in an automobile accident just a year after graduating from Friends devastated his friends and classmates. Inspired by his memories of Ronny and motivated by the School’s new Fine and Performing Arts Center, Joe Cowan and his wife Ozzie in October 2015 endowed a scholarship fund in Ronny’s memory.
What is a 5:1 challenge? For every $1 raised for the scholarship, the Cowans will match $5, up to $500,000. ►Worth noting: A scholarship of this size provides the School with an additional $25,000 annually in financial aid.
Who does the memorial scholarship support? The fund provides scholarship assistance to one or more students of financial need who exhibit theatrical talent or performing arts promise.
What is the timing for this challenge? We aim to secure $100,000 in new gifts and pledges for the Friedberg Scholarship by December 31, 2015. This will generate a total of $500,000 from the Cowans.

The fine print: Only NEW gifts and pledges count for the challenge. Pledges or gifts made in prior school years do not qualify.
