Friends to welcome 5 (count 'em 5!) Newbery Award authors to campus this year

Friends School will welcome 2016 Newbery Honor Book author Kimberly Brubaker Bradley ("The War That Saved My Life") to campus on Thursday, October 6. Ms. Bradley will speak with students in grades 3 through 8 about her life and her writing. She is the first of five Newbery Honor authors who will come to Friends this year. The others include:
Cece Bell, author of 2015 Newbery Honor, "El Deafo" – October 17;
Pam Muñoz Ryan, author of 2016 Newbery Honor, "Echo" – October 24
Matt de la Peña, winner of 2016 Newbery Medal, "Last Stop on Market Street" – November 9
Victoria Jamieson, author of 2016 Newbery Honor, "Roller Girl" –May 18-19

The Newbery Award is considered by many to be the top children’s book award. Friends students benefit from a robust schedule of award-winning authors thanks in large part to Lower School Librarian John Scott, who served on the 2016 Newbery Medal Selection Committee and also on the selection committee for the 2010 Caldecott Medal, given to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book.

The excitement surrounding this year’s line-up of authors is contagious. “I love that we get to learn more about all these great books. It really sparks your interest in reading,” says La’Mya Flowers ’22. Aaron Trudeau '23 concurs, noting, “It’s pretty spectacular. I’m really looking forward to Newbery Award winner Matt de la Pena.”

And don't forget the teachers, says Middle School Librarian Tracy Thompson: “How many schools have students geek out over author visits? Not that many I bet. We are exceptional.”
