The Quakers returned from winter break ready to wrestle, and on January 4 defeated St. Mary’s on the road, 39-33. “All wrestlers got a chance to compete, either in an official or an exhibition match, and all showed real heart,” says coach Bill Hardy. The team entered the competition at a disadvantage, having forfeited the first four weight classes. Caleb Trudeau ‘18 started narrowing the 0-18 gap by catching his opponent and pinning him in the first period. Lance Kevin ’18 continued the trend in his match, taking his opponent down in the first period and arm-barring him to his back for a pin in the second. Dylan Jesner ’19 started out cautiously but ended his match with good takedown straight-to-back points and a decision victory, 10-3. Zach Smith ’19 (152 lbs.) struggled to take down his opponent but kept the score to a 2-7 loss by decision. The Quakers were still down, 15-27, after Kyle Spawn '17’s (160 lbs.) loss to a tough opponent, when Ben Sherbakov ’18 (170 lbs.) pinned his opponent on his second takedown in the first period, bringing the score to 21-27. Tres Conaway ‘18, back from a football injury, took his opponent down twice before pinning him in the first period to tie the score, 27-all. The Quakers forfeited the 195 lb. class, dipping the score to 27-33 before Jack Schreck ‘17 (220 lbs.) bear-hugged his opponent to his back for a pin, tying the match again, 33-all. This brought Sam Billups ‘17 to the mat, where he controlled the match from the start. Though unable to take his opponent down in the first period, Sam chose the down position in the second and used his "patented" roll to get a reversal, bringing the Quakers the win, 39-33.
Competing in exhibition matches, Daniel Millspaugh ‘17, Jack Goodenough ’19, Tres Conaway ’18, David Stallsmith ’20, and Pace Schwarz ’19 all pinned their men. The team will travel to Annapolis Christian H.S. on Wednesday, January 11 for a 4:15 pm tri-meet with Gerstell Academy. GO QUAKES!
