Grappling toward States

Competing in the M.I.A.A. tournament on Friday and Saturday, February 10-11, Varsity Wrestling held tough. Of the eight wrestlers who traveled to Mt. St. Joseph’s, three, including Lance Kevin ’18 (132 lbs.), Caleb Boyer ’18 (138 lbs.), and Jack Schreck ’17 (220 lbs.), made it to the second day of competition. Five wrestlers – Pace Schwarz ’19 (1-2), Kyle Spawn ’17 (0-2), Jay Gonya ’17 (0-2), Tres Conaway ’18 (0-2), and Sam Billups ’17 (0-2) – were knocked out of this double elimination tournament on Friday. On Day 2, Caleb Boyer lost his first match on Saturday putting him out of the tournament. Lance Kevin won his first match over Severn in sudden-victory overtime. That win was followed by two losses – the first by a technical fall to a Loyola wrestler, and the other in a St. Paul’s match-up. Despite these disappointments, he ended up placing 6th after being seeded 7th at the tournament’s outset. Jack Schreck lost his semifinal match to the number one seed from St. Paul’s in a well-wrestled match, but handily won his semifinal consolation match, pinning his opponent in the second period. Although he wrestled well in the consolation finals against McDonogh, he ended up losing, 2-10, by a major decision to clinch 4th place. Lance and Jack become the second and third Friends School wrestlers to place at the M.I.A.A. tournament in the past nine years. (Caleb Boyer placed 6th last year.)

The Quakers return to the mat this weekend for the double-elimination Maryland Independent State Tournament at Harford Community College. Up to 30 teams will grapple to determine who advances to the National Prep Tournament at Lehigh University. The action begins at 3:30 pm, Friday Feb. 17.
Come out and cheer for the team!
