Up for debate

Congratulations to Hunter Davis ’17 and Marina Chiaramonte ‘17, #1 seed in the Maryland State Qualifying Tournament of the Baltimore Catholic Forensic League (BCFL). Hunter and Marina will be competing in the “public forum” debate at Catonsville High School on March 25 with a shot to nationals in Louisville, KY on the line. The Friends seniors started the Debate Team as a club two years ago and, with fellow debaters Wes Culp ’17, Mason Davis ’19, Christian Filt ’18 (see below), Lucas Orta ‘19, Amee Rothman ’19, Jane Sartwell ’18, Ariane Sharifi ’18, Carrie Wang ’19, and Emma Scherer ’19, have since built it into a formidable program on the BCFL circuit. On the international debate scene, Christian Filt ’18, who joined the Upper School last fall from his native Slovakia, traveled to Copenhagen earlier this month to compete internationally with the Slovakian Schools National Debate Team. In August he hopes to travel with the team to Bali, Indonesia, for the World Schools Debating Championship. Christian, who also served on the 2016 Slovakian team, became interested in debate as a freshman at the Bilingual Gymnasium of Milan Hodža in Sučany, Slovakia. “The debate club there is the oldest in the country, and it’s a big part of school culture,” he shared. Thanks to a growing roster of talented talkers, debate is fast becoming a big part of Friends School culture, as well.
