Hungry for the win

Varsity Softball traveled to Park School’s Sugar campus on Tuesday, April 18, where they defeated the Bruins in a tightly matched contest, 11-9. Offensive highlights included a booming double in the 5th inning hit by Madison Moore ’17, with 2 outs and the score tied 6-6, to send Bianca Roque ’20 across home plate. Olivia Nengel ’20 came up next with a single to increase the lead to 2 as Moore scored. The score was again tied 8- 8 in the 6th inning when Katie Capizzi ’18 hit a 3-run homer to put the Quakes up for good. Tyler Rifkin '18 was 4 for 4 with 2 singles, a triple and a homerun. Both she and Capizzi were terrific on the mound and behind the plate. Capizzi threw out her 4th stealer of the season. Julia Parker ’20 notched 2 hits, including a double and, with the Quakes up 2 in the bottom of the 6th inning, made a huge play on defense, snagging a line drive down the first base-side to preserve the lead. Other notable defense players included a flawless Madison Moore at short-stop and Anya Price ‘17, who made a huge play in the 7th to preserve the win. Says coach Ken Zalis, “Every single player contributed in this game. The team was as focused as I have seen them this year, you could tell they wanted this game.” The Quakers are off to a 5 -1 start this year and presently sit in second place. They will travel to St. Tim’s on Thursday, April 20, for a 4:45 pm game.
