Quakes win thriller vs GFS!

On a beautiful day, the Girls Varsity Soccer team traveled to Garrison Forest to open their 2017 conference schedule.  The Quakes were eager to test themselves versus cross town rival, Garrison Forest.  Garrison Forest defeated the Quakes 5 – 0 last year and finished with an 8 – 5 conference record,  while the Quakes struggled through the 2016 season losing nine seniors and hobbling to a 2 – 10 conference record.
Friends applied pressure early and pinned Garrison Forest in their own end.  In the 4th minute Seraya Makle ’18 took the 1st corner of the day, hitting a great ball along the 6-yard line where McKenna Klausner ’19 headed the ball into the back of the net, giving the Quakes a quick  1- 0 lead. The goal by Klausner was her 5th goal in 3 games. GFS played hard-nosed soccer the rest of the half getting a few solid chances, but  Freshman goalie Fiona McManus ’21 was up the to challenge and kept a clean sheet through the first half.  The half ended with the Quakes clinging to a  1-0 lead.
The Quakes came out strong in the second half with several shots on goal, one hitting the post and two others barely missing the net.  In the 20th minute, the GFS back line hit a nice through ball which was deposited past freshman goalie Sophia Rosenberg ’21 to tie the score at 1. Sophia rebounded nicely after the goal and making two key saves. Regulation ended with the game tied at 1.
In Overtime, the Quakes controlled the ball earning corner after corner but could not find the back of the net as the GFS goalie was up to the challenge. The first OT ended still tied, but in the 1st minute of second OT, Mary Charlotte Mortimer ’20 took the ball down the left side cut it back and found Zaria Dancer ’20 inside the 18-yard line. Zaria took a touch and shot low far post for the thrilling double OT win.
The Quakes travel to Jemicy for a non-conference game on Friday, as they attempt to stay perfect on the year.
