Inquiry based

Students in Dr. Newton’s Advanced Biology course gain in-depth understanding of a variety of biological processes and technologies with an emphasis, in the first semester, on human anatomy and physiology. Capping their unit on infectious disease, students role-play as recent medical school graduates, seeking to diagnose hypothetical “patients” (played by faculty and staff) who present with different mystery ailments. The laboratory and inquiry-based process allow students to gain a deeper understanding of the structure, function, and interrelatedness of the human body systems while focusing on their patients immediate and long-term needs. Accuracy and empathy, even in a simulated clinical situation, is required as the adult volunteers offer feedback on the doctor-patient experience.
