In its season debut on Wednesday, December 6, the Middle School Wrestling team defeated McDonogh, 39-38. The win is especially big given the two teams’ contrasting rosters: Friends’ squad includes just 12 wrestlers, seven of whom are 6th graders and eight of whom have no prior experience; McDonogh’s team is comprised of more than 20 7th and 8th grade wrestlers.
Highlights included pins by Jacob Grossman '22 (2),Willie Mallonee '22, and Quin Smith '22 (3). Equally exciting were hard-fought matches by Aaron Trudeau '23, who won a fantastic 6-4 match against a very strong opponent; Tyler Axilbund '24 who, although overmatched, battled hard, controlled the score, and ended up only giving a decision, not a pin, to his opponent; and Colin Moon '24, who, after scouting his opponent in the previous two matches, cleverly countered his "yank your opponent's head into the ground" move to lose by an incredibly close 2-3 decision.
Said coach Andy Spawn, “The best part for me is that almost every wrestler on the team can claim the victory. That one-point margin could have swung in most of the matches, but with hard work and gutsy wrestling we controlled our score and came out on top.”
