Quakes clip Falcons
The Boys Varsity Lacrosse team on Tuesday, March 6 traveled to Our Lady of Good Counsel H.S. in Olney, Md., where they defeated the Falcons, 8-7 in OT. Friends established an early 3-0 lead with goals by Patrick Linehan '18, Skyler Kessenich '18 and Will Ciccarone '18 (the latter two assisted by Owen McManus '18 ). Good Counsel battled back with two goals in the second half of the first quarter, one of which was scored with 0 seconds on the clock!
The second quarter belonged to the Falcons as they quickly added 3 goals to erase the Quakers’ once-commanding lead. That lead that would have been bigger if not for the superb first half goalie play by Dawson Bordick ’18, who made multiple point-blank saves and finished with 7 for the game. Late in the half, Kavon Samuels ’18 came up with a huge goal in transition on a nice feed from Stephen Bogusky '18 to bring the Quakes to within one point at the half.
The second half started with a back and forth contest that had the fans on the edge of their seats. A big goal in transition by long stick middie (LSM) Eli Sherbakov ‘20 seemed to give momentum back to Friends, and an outside rip by Clayton Abrecht '19 off another great feed by Bogusky made it clear that the Quakers would not go away easily on this night. Midway through the 4th, the Quakes were down 7-6 when Patrick Linehan dodged left, separated from his defender, and knotted things up at 7-all, which would set up an outstanding finish. After 6 shots on the cage for Friends during the last three minutes of regulation, the game went into overtime. Following solid possessions by both teams, Friends attacked the alley and an inside feed from Stephen Bogusky found its way to Will Ciccarone who sent a worm burner into the back of the net as the Quakers charged the field!
Second half defense was a key to the win, as goalie Ross Blumenthal ’18 held Good Counsel to just two goals and pocketed 6 saves in the half. Defensemen Carter Jones '19 and Andrew Ayers '18 played incredible defense the entire game and Andrew Nathans '19 won 60% of his attempts from the face-off X to help lead Friends to victory.
